Protecting the Global Environment

Nipro Pharma is committed to providing a healthy tomorrow for us all. We, conduct business activities with environmental protection strongly in mind. Accordingly, we have established an Environmental Policy and we implement activities to realize a sustainable society. Nipro Pharma obtained certifications for ISO 14001 Environmental Management System and EcoAction 21. Under the System, we are continuously engaging in activities to improve the environment, reducing its burden and conserving limited resources.

Use of Biomass Boiler

In our Odate Plant, we achieved a reduction in CO2 emissions by operating a Biomass Boiler, which rotates a turbine by burning wood chips instead of fossil fuel. It is a public and private-sector joint project between Nipro Pharma and the Odate City Government, which has developed a wood biomass processing and marketing project by using excess timber from forest thinning. This is an example of our effort to contribute to creating a sustainable community.

Fuel Switch from Heavy Oil to Natural Gas

In our Kagamiishi Plant, we switched fuel for the boiler used for heating from heavy oil to natural gas, which generates less CO2, and achieved a reduction in CO2 emissions. In addition, in other manufacturing plants, we introduced high-efficiency equipment to increase fuel efficiency and we are thereby striving to reduce CO2 emissions.

In the Kagamiishi Plant, CO2 emissions were reduced by 2,673 tons in FY 2017 by the change of fuel, which resulted in a reduction rate of 86.2% from FY 2015, before the fuel switch.

Other Activities

Nipro Pharma introduced the Environment Management System (EMS) and is developing EMS activities company-wide.

  1. Implementing 3R activity: Reduce, Re-use, and Recycle waste by improving production efficiency, changing the packing of materials for delivery, eliminating excessive quality testing, etc.
  2. Activities to reduce the environmental burden, such as conducting on-site wastewater treatment (deactivation) on water used for manufacturing, which contains antibiotics, and thereby preventing their release into the natural environment.
  3. Scheduled switching from air conditioners and cooling equipment using old-type chlorofluorocarbons (specified CFCs), which cause ozone depletion, to currently accepted chlorofluorocarbons (CFC substitutes) and to the latest refrigerants in all plants, in compliance with laws and regulations.
